For a short time, Microsoft offered a free application called Microsoft Private Folder. For some reason -- and I don't know why -- it is no longer available from Microsoft. I do have a copy, though, and have made it available on my web site for you to download:
Another method you might try; if you have multiple user accounts on your computer, are using XP Pro and your hard drive is formatted in the NTFS file system then you can right click on the folder you want to make private, go to the Advanced button near the bottom of the box and check the box marked "Encrypt contents to secure data".
When you do this, the name of the folder will appear in green and the only accounts that will have access to it are the one that you were logged into when you encrypted it as well as the "Administrator" account that is created on install.
Who gave you people access to a computer?

How does this MPF actually works? Is there, i.e. any system driver files involved?

Give the free and open source 'TrueCrypt' a try.
You can create a 'File Container' or as i have done, create an encrypted partition that is only visible when mounted.
When unmounted, it dissapears from 'My Computer'.

No system driver files is involved. It's just M$ trick of manipulating the OS for it to work (They won't tell you how it work -the info is too proprietary for you to know)
