Hello all,

I've been having a problem with my new Acer laptop: a great many programs just refuse to open when I double click on them. This includes Adobe Acrobat Reader, which I have already installed, as well as numerous Setup programs for ZoneAlarm, among others. When I do double click on them, nothing happens, but when I check on Windows Task Manager, the program I am trying to open is listed under 'processes' and usually takes up 95-100% of the CPU power, and stays that way for a LONG time.

Also, things like MSN Messenger go through the same process when I am trying to use them (maybe after 5minutes of use, or for example when someone tries to send a file transfer my way): their window goes white, the CPU usage rockets up to 100%, and the only way I can get my computer back is by closing that process through Windows Task Manager.

If anyone has any idea why this is happening, please write me back either here or at rocaveli [at] gmail .com

maybe all this programs are set to high priority check this in task manager and if you cant see the page then try alt-tat key and choose the application and its going to show up, to do the alt-tab thing you need to have to windows open or more, if that doesn't work try going to task manager right clicking the application and click bring to front

not too many... it's got nothing to do with the number of programs I run because I can have 100 iexplorer windows open surfing the internet but I cant open those setup files even right after a restart. I should add my computer is only a couple of weeks old. I cant even get the ActiveX things on the online virus scanning websites to install properly.

Oh..and my programs are all at 'normal' priority, I changed a window that was frozen to 'realtime' priority...it made my whole computer REAL slow, and I closed it using the Task Manager.

maybe the recovery cd that came with your computer a reinstall wont be that bad and you won't lose any data, or unless you dont care about the data you can do a clean install of windows

one last idea are you sure you have anti-virus protection up to date and spyware has not taken over your computer

Disable Indexing Services

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html
Indexing services is a small program that hogs HUGE amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexing and updates lists of the files on your system, so you can search for them quickly, but it's completley unnecessary.

To disable it, go to the Control Panel and click Add or Remove Programs. Click the Add/Remove Window Components. Simply untick the Indexing services and click Next!

unfortunately, most of the ActiveX apps required to run those antivirus softwares wont install either...I did manage to run a trojan/spyware removal though which found absolutely nothing.

I've got plenty of free space (3-4gigs on each HDD), and supposadely 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 2GHz processor so I have no clue what's going on. It's sort of getting worse, though: AIM decides not to work at some points now, even after a fresh restart, so I have no clue what's going on. A hardware conflict? But with what?
