My programs will not open. In fact, nothing works. I click on a program and a window pops up suggesting that I browse my computer, or use the internet to best select a program to open the file. What happened to all of my programs. I can't use anything. I can't even get into the help and support function on my computer. Nothing is available.
I was thinking that reinstalling windows would be a good idea, but how do I do this? I inserted the cd, and restarted but nothing is working. When I go to my computer and look at the cd I enter set-up. From there, I click install and nothing happens.
I have run out of ideas. Please help.

Hi Kelly
You might have a file association problem, which might have been caused by a trojan variant. Look for "Exe File Association Fix".
The Dougknox Fix Page
http://www.dougknox.com/http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip
Two things you can try: -
1. start>run> type in sfc /scannow (notice the space between sfc and /, you will need to have the xp cd in the drive). If that doesn`t work, go into the bios force the comp to boot fron cd (with the xp cd in the drive) do an install you will be asked if you want to install or repair, hit install, at the second install or repair prompt hit repair, both ways sfc or repair from cd will repair your file system without losing data.
If that doesn't fix it seems like the config.sys and windows.sys files are damaged way too bad. In that case I recommend re-installing all of your apps. Backup all your non application files to partition/another harddrive. re-install your OS clean.
I wish you luck in getting your programs to function again.
Let us know how it went.
Kev HTH.
