WinXP also has a system restore. It can save you from an installation gone South. You may need to verify a restore point prior to installing something new. System restore defaults to a max. of 12% of the available space on the partition. You can change that setting easily. Once the threshold has been reached the oldest file will be overwritten.
Some helpers here don't like system restore. When I ran WinXP I used it and it saved me a few times.
