program install problems

I posted something similar to this earlier called "Windows Update Problems" but I'll re-phrase it here:
Whenever I try to install a program... be it a windows update or Direct X 9, or Media player, or anything... The instalation just comes to a standstill for what seems like half an hour right when it begins the actual instalation.
right now I am trying to install media player 9 and it is stopped right where it says "setting system restore point" (i don't know if that helps but i thought i'd mention it) The same happened when installing MS Office and other various programs.
anyone heard of this before or know what might be causing it? Where do I go from here?

That is weird cause windows just put out a update for proframs laging and locking up during install

Have youn tried running a diags on ur system specifically on your hard drive? The problem you are having right now maybe related to a hardware issue. Run some diags on your hard drive and memory, or better yet to the whole system. If all test pass, try running sfc /scannow, msconfig, or even performing repair/reinstallation of your os. If all steps have been performed and still having the same issue, back up your data and perform a "clean" reinstallation. Hope this helps!

I did a clean install of XP today, the problem arose AFTER the new install. I've never had the problem before... using the exact same software and OS.
I ran the full system scan at PCPitstop.com and it says that everything is fine. I also ran a virus scan just in case but nothing there either
