after formatting the machine (IBM) will not accept the product key. What can I do?

If you used a different install disc to install XP rather than the one on your IBM, you have to use the Product number of the install disc.

Then when you go to activate it, you can enter your IBM product number and will probably have to call the activation center to get it activated.
