Check with the performance manager.

direct connect is the program using most CPU time? could that be it? I don't think I have downloaded it since a installed win xp but I had win2k before and therefore I had the version for win2k. but I'll try installing the xp version and see it that helps.
It comes from a software called CPUFanControl pre-installed when you buy your computer. Best thing is it's not even listed on the "Add/Remove Programs" list.
Only have to browse to the directory they installed it in and remove it since it's your computer, I got no idea where they might put it. Or, reinstall windows only and also reinstall every driver and software besides that CPUFanControl.
Hope that helps.

I didn't buy my computer with windows pre-installed. I've put it together part by part and installed everything myself. I searched the directory for CPUFanControl and came up with nothing. But I installed DC for XP and it seems to work better now.
