Comment:

I just purchaced the Dell Inspiron 6000. It came with everything installed.

The first time I used Windows Media Player to rip a cd to the hard drive, it went into an unknown album. When I tried in change that information manually, it didn't work and froze Windows Media Player. (It's a mix cd, so trying to find the information for that album is a mute point.)

I then ripped another album, and it went as a unknown album. I tried to find the information online like Windows Media Player lets you do, and it froze.

It also put the second album in the first unknown album.

Thsi unknown album also has some random music I did not put on there, the media sounds for my computer (Like when Windows starts up and shuts down) as well as a series of files with names like this U1L2GE. They run between 2 and 3 minutes long, but have no sound.

My question is--can I unintall and re-install Windows Media Player or are these files I need? Can I do anything else to get these files and sound out of my library?

If you use the Media Player version that came with XP, I think you can't uninstall it. You can use the add/remove programs then windows components to remove access to it but that doesn't take the files off the machine. You could use the sfc /scannow to replace the windows media player program files if you think that they are corrupt. Or restore machine to a previous date.
To get the files out of the library on wmp don't you just right click and delete? I never did like that library thing on the wmp because it was to confusing. If I rip some songs to my hard drive I just put them in a folder named for that album or a made up name if it is a mix.
As to how those other files got in there you will have to retrace your steps to find how tracks you don't know got in there. Mine did not start with any except the sample ones that came in My Music folder.

I use WMP as my for all my music and have few issues. What you may want to try is to upgrade your version of WMP- the latest is WMP 10. This may work. If doesnt you may have to take the extreme and reinstall WMP.
