This has only started the last 2 days. Disk C defrag starts and goes so far then stops, and I get the message," Some files on this volume could not be defragmented. Please check the defragmentation report for these files".
I am at a complete loss what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Defrag is likely to work best while you are in Windows Safe-Mode.

Also delete the contents in this folder ---
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
The Prefetch folder is quite large.
I have deleted all files there, even
Layout.ini, at times without problems.
It will rebuild itself over time.

It's an informative message, not an error message. You don't need to worry about it at all. It'll NEVER be able to defrag all files because the OS is using some of them. Leave your prefetch folder alone - it helps speed things up.

Actually it can slow your boot time down if not maintained.

This is why you want to periodically delete everything in the prefetch folder. This is the only way to get rid of stuff preloading that is not required.
