Comment:

i have an archive of rar files that i know to be fine but when i check the crc with the sfv file that is for this set each time the corrupt files are different, sometimes 5 files are bad sometimes only 2 are bad but usually differnt from the last time. also the bad files seem to be in a cluster together then the rest check out ok.

i have other problems besides this but are all of a similar nature.

i ran memtest86 version 3 last night for about 6 hours and didnt get a single memory problem so im pretty sure the ram is ok.

is there a utility to test the cpu for errors or could it be anything else?

applications seem to load ok from either the hdd or cdrom, so but not sure where to go from here.

the mobo is KT4 Ultra (2 weeks old) the cpu is about 1 year old and the ram is same as cpu.

any ideas

thanks

Experienced the same thing -- random corruption of various files. I discovered XP always sets the partitions to 2-bit clusters even if you tell it to leave the drive like it is. Have converted the drive to 4-bit clusters with Partition Magic and am no longer experiencing corruption -- and also seem to have a boost in performance.

ok some more info on this problem

cpu was running at 62 degrees so i have purchased a better fan, this keeps the cpu at about 45 degrees however having completed a clean install on a different hard drive the problem still persists.

so if i work on the assumption that the ram is fine then it can only be the mobo or the cpu ? is that right?

also i read that the via chipset potentially has issues of this nature but am not too sure about this. Can anybody offer anymore advice.

its beginning to deflate me. LOL

btw this partition magic fix you did what exactly did you set the cluster size to?
it is currently set at 16k
