I get a Fatal Error message that states: an error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The parameter is incorrect. Installation failed D:\I386\asms. Can anyone help me out? Thanks
With the lack of info you give it's hard to even guess. Give HDD size, is there any other partitions on it? Do you have a CD-Rom? Were you having trouble w/ ME? What kind of XP is it? Home? Pro? Corp.? OEM? Burned? Downloaded? ETC.

Did you run the "Windows XP compatability test" from the CD first? If you had you should have been told to uninstall Norton Antivirus before attempting to install. That's what it told me. Afterwards, you'll need to get Norton 2002 Antivirus. You may have other problems besides that, but the first thing I'd try is uninstalling Norton. It's probably killing the file that XP is trying to load.
Good Luck

Could just be the burned copy, I've seen that happen before, Its flaky. The same CD will work on one PC and not the other with the same hardware. If you can burn another and maybe try CD Clone.
I had met the same problem at a friend's PC. You 'd better format your PC, install Win98 and next, reinstall WinXP. It may be a long time proccess but it is guaranteeing. WinMe is a bagly nightmare.
