i have been trying to upgrade my friends computer from win 98 to xp.
my first hurdle revolved around the following error message:
installation failed: d?\i386\asms error message: data error (cyclic redudnancy check)
i found a thread on here that allowed me to fix my controls.man file which was corrupted. i fixed the file and burned a new cd. upon continuing to install the xp, i now get the following error message:
RegOpenKeyEx(SYSTEM\Setup\Pid) Returned error 2 (2)
i have searched for info on this and have none.
the original thread i used to solve my problem was quite old, here's a link:

thanks,
jason

Do you have to install over 98?
A better route to go is to CLEAN INSTALL Win XP, and it will perform better and quite likely give less problems down the road.
