We installed Win XP on our computers and we are also running a network. For some reson msn Messenger doesn't want to load anytime the computer starts and u double click for you to sign in. It is just not loading what possible can be the problem and also what seems to be the best solution.

Do you mean, it's not logging on tpo the web? if you do there are a few possible reasons for this, do you have a firewall? if you do, you may need to change the setting to allow connection for Messenger, just disable the firewall to and then see if it will load, this will eliminate this problem, if it does load, then you will need to change the settings, don't forget you also have an XP firewall that may be activated, you can access this by clicking the properties on your network connections and hitting the advance tab. Also open the preferences tab in the optionss of Messenger and make sure you haven't checked the "USE PROXY" box, if this is checked, just uncheck it and try again. This same thing happened to me, in the end I uninstalled Messenger and reinstalled it.

Let us know how ir turns out please!

Matt

It could be that the firewall (ICF). The solution is to instruct ICF to allow specific openings in its security net(TCP ports) to permit cetain types of traffic to pass through.

Hope this helps. Bye

Actually no it is not even getting to the point where you get to sign in your log in name to connect to the internet.

What I mean is when your sytem starts up and u go start, programs and ms messenger, it just refuses to load from there. Meaning it is not coming up to give you that option to plug in you ID and Password to connect.

If there is any solutions you can think of it will be very helpful.

Ok open RUN> cut and paste this command:-

"RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"-

with out the puntaution marks.
then reboot.

You might get a critical update after you have rebooted, if you do, just do it and dit will download messenger again, if not download messenger from here

http://messenger.msn.co.uk/download/download.asp?client=0&MSID=f90f3ca334cc4c4c97e0f05d49357af8.

Then reboot, this should solve your problem.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW IT WAS???

Thanx matt I will try but I must say we have tried installing messenger all over agin and it still didn't work, and actually the problem gets tricky.

As I said we are running a network and certain user like admin users can load msn messenger once they log onto the network with their own accounts but unauthorise users if u want to call them that can not access msn messenger when they log into the network with their own accounts.

That is basically the problem I am faced with.

I'm having exactly the same problem. I have 5 users on my system; an admin user, a power user, and 3 standard users. Only the Power User can run MSN messenger successfully. For the others, MSN messenger does not run. In addition, when the users attempt to access hotmail via the web, the browser stops responding.

Any ideas here?

Ok this is what we have done, We recreated new accounts for everyone on our system and so far all the accounts we have recreated msn is working on it properly.

So I am not sure that is just a suggestion, you can try.

I'm having a problem with my too. In the beginning I disable the messaging service, but now when I try to lauch the EXE it doesn't load anything. I've re-installed it many times and nothing. I checked the event viewer and I get this event id 4 saying (MSN/WINDOWS Messger) could not be found and that a DLL is missing or something. I check Technet and couldn't find nothing on this event ID (of course) the only alternative I have is to re-install, which I don't want to do. I've tried the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"-
But that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?

Hello All,
I am having a really difficult time getting MSN messenger to run with my username and password. It runs ok for the other user on my settings page. My hotmail and passport is ok. Also it is not allowing to d/load msn chat. I have done a full ie6 reinstall. Have unintalled messenger thoroughly. Re installed. Checked java and enabled that. Security settings set and cookies enabled. Does anyone know how to get around this error.

Cheers all

Has the pc that you are using been set up to use internet sharing? This generally gives you problems with sending files.

Try this if you can't get messenger to run:

In addition to the command line, did you use any Registry edits to block
Windows Messenger as well? If so:

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client

In the right pane look for any of the following values, and if found,
right click on the value and select Delete

PreventRun
PreventAutoRun
PreventAutoUpdate
PreventBackgroundDownload
Disabled

Cheers.

Ok,
I will join the list of people with the same problem, I am running XP and MSN Messenger, Messenger works fine on my Admin user, but on all others it will not start. Like the rest I click the Icon and nothing happens, I can find no alerts or diagnostics in XP, it just doesn't run. I have checked the Registry and all appears fine.
Anyone got any ideas ?

I'm having exactly the same problems as you Richard. As an administrator or power user I can run MSN no problem. I can run it also if I do "Run As" and choose Administrator when logged on as a normal user. But as a normal user it will not load. I just get the egg-timer for a second or so and then nothing else. I checked Event Viewer - nothing.

I think whatever is causing this is causing Outlook Express to start up really slowly as well: maybe because OE is trying to load MSN.

So yeah, I'm joining the queue. If anyone's got any info I'd love to hear it!

Well success.
This problem is discussed on the Microsoft communities for Windows Messenger and Jonathan Kay has a fix, just download from the following site then logon to the limited user account and run the fix. I have tried this and MSN now works, it updates your Registry in some way.I only applied it today and so far all seems fine, but I am no expert I will await developments all I can say is that its working at the moment.

Hi Matt, and everyone else that seems to know a LOT more about systems than I do. I have the same problem as Kate, I manage to sign into Messenger every now and then, but then it throws me off after a few minutes, only to sign on automatically after a few minutes. Of course when I actually try to use the messenger feature, I can get about 2-3 messages out, before it informs me that "you are currently not signed in"... so. Any advice? As everyone here, I am a Messenger NUT and not liking this a whole lot. I tried downlowding the JonathanKay fix but that didn't seem to do anything either. I don't know if we use a firewall, I wouldn't be surprised if we do (don't want to ask my administrator) but we are on a network, so if someone can let me know where to find this settings for the firewall, and where to change the TCP settings, that would be a major help!

Thanks all!
Susan

Well just to confirm that the Jonathan Kay fix works fine for me and it seems to ne an honest fix, i have experienced no adverse effects and MSN now works fine on all user accounts.
Fot those of you complaining about intermitant failures in MSN messenger this fix will not help, your problem is unlikely to be a firewall or you would never get any connection. As you appear to not be the administrator or prepared to contacthim/her your options are small. Are you using a Net Passport id ?

I am using a 'net passport id.. i have no problems with messenger except for Sending files! I'm so frustrated, as I can receive.. I even changed my connection to show that I have direct connection to cable modem and it's not a shared computer. Does the Jonathan Kay fix have anything to do with that? Also, I assume my problems with netmeeting and webcam chat is only because the other user doesn't have XP?

Any help would be GRRRREATLY appreciated.

Wendy
