Ok, here is the problem I am having, when I go to open my computer, my documents, my pictures, and other various, (but not all programs) they will not open. An error comes up that says it is unable to open wants to send a report to microsoft. It list a file in the local settings, temp files that is a wer file. I looked for these files and the ones listed are missing. Is there anyway to get these files back with out doing a complete restore. i tried a system restore, and have also checked for a virus. Is there anything I can do, The person the computer belongs to does not want to do a complete restore.

if not too many days have passed since error, use the system restore to go back to date prior to error...

Hey Man Try a system file check. Click on start/run and type in sfc /scannow Notice the space after c and before /. This will reinstall any system files that might be corrupted. It is the repair feature if you can boot which you seem to be able to do! If any files are corrupt, you will be asked to insert your XP CD.
