problems loading XP on IBM intellistation pro

Specs: Windows Vista
hi, i picked up a virus on my IBM intellistation M pro machine. i didn't have anything real important on it so i tried to load a new version of XP and i keep getting a message that the software does not detect a harddrive. has anyone seen this? is there somthing specific to IBM that i need to get so this install will work. i do not have the IBM recovery disk, but didn't think i needed it if i was wiping out the old XP and putting on a new one. Any help is greatly appreciated.

sinceley, john

"has anyone seen this?"

Sure, you probably have a SATA hard drive & XP doesn't recognize it. Do you have a floppy drive? Do you have a copy of the SATA drivers?

There are basically two types of hard drive interfaces in use these days, the older is IDE (aka PATA), the newer is SATA. SATA drives were released after WinXP, therefore XP doesn't recognize them unless one of the methods in the "how-to" link I posted in my other response is used. The easiest way to tell SATA from IDE/PATA is to look at the data cable that connects the drive to the motherboard. Have a look at the following - IDE/PATA is on the left, SATA is on the right:

You'll find the SATA/RAID driver at the motherboard manufacturer's website or if you have an OEM system (Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq, etc), you'll find the driver at their website.

mick, totally confused - i tried 3 different drivers and even the one from IBm that is suppose to match the intellistation pro M 6218 computer that i have, and i keep getting a "TXTsetup.oem could not be found" message when i try to load from the floppy disk. any ideas??

if i was to load windows 7 would that work without having to go through all of this trouble. i was also told that i have a scsi drive. are scsi and sata the same? should they be treated the same? just want to get this running. thanks in advance, john
