This is a problem all my fellow pc techs will 'enjoy' answering. I recently built a new pc and I can't install Windows XP. So then I tried installing Windows 98 and it worked just fine but I DO NOT want 98. I tried installing Windows XP after I installed 98 and I get an error, cant really recall the error but its after I get real far done with installing xp and after you have to restart it. It comes to a blue screen with an error along the lines of this, STOP: 0x000blahblah and it tells me to check the harddrive and what not. It also says that windows xp cannot be upgraded from 98 so I tried the upgrade version of xp, SAMETHING. I have no Fing clue what to do, I have tried a lot more than I said here. All the jumpers are set corretly, boot process, EVERYTHING. I just built this thing and its going to be awesome once it freakin works. Help would be much appreciated.

P.S. If you get it to work I will be your best friend in the whole freakin world.

Scott

Hi Piranha,

That stop code may give you a clue to where the error might be.

Look up your stop code on this the WINDOWS STOP MESSAGES page and you may be able to narrow down your problem.

As you have not given us the stop code we cannot really help you much.

I cannot stress this too often. However, anyone who seeks assistance needs to give as much detail of the fault as possible as this will enable us to help them in the right way.

The fact that you can install Win98 but not XP suggests a hardware issue.

You could also try running the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor to see what it has to say about your systems ability to run XP.

Wow, thanks a lot for that link, it got me exactly what I needed im pretty sure. I think I need to fix the sysprep file or something. Its giving me step by step instructions but I do not know how to change the CMD prompt to C:\. If you know how that would be awesome. Thanks a lot

You have still not said what your error was.

You question is vague. If I understand correctly, I assume you are able to fire up a command prompt window but it does not open to C:\. To get to C:\ just type:
cd C:\

Are you using SATA hard drive?

If you are you may need to load your SATA drivers at the start of the install.

The following is how you would load the SATA driver at the start:

The first message on the bottom of your
screen will stay "Press F-6" if you need to install third party RAID or SCSI drivers. Hit F-6, the setup will continue copying files and then later a blue screen will come up asking you to hit the "S" key to install third party RAID or SCSI drivers. Hit "S" it will then ask you for a floppy disk and to hit "ENTER".

A list will come up with the drivers on the floppy disk, choose the appropriate SATA RAID controller from the list. You will get a message that says the driver your trying to use is newer then the default XP driver and to again hit "S" to use this driver. DO SO!

You may need to create a floppy with your SATA drivers on it if your motherboard did not come with one.

just intall the XP with "Ghost XP 8.2 or 8.3", it is much eaiser and everythings are to be set automatically, just a few minutes of time, the system will be fully set up...and it is very convient to restore the system within a few minutes of times...

My guess is you have a RAM problem. Win98 is more tolerant of memory errors than XP. RAM should always be tested before being "put into service". Try running memtest86.
