I am working on a PIII XP computer. I was first troubleshooting the PC to find out why the printer wasn't working. (couldnt find the .dll's it needed) I assumed after a reboot I would have better luck. I restarted (the lady's PC whom I working on this for has never restarted) So after I restart it begins a 3 step process of running chkdsk. Here are two of the hundreds of errors I found "File record segment 33143 is unreadable" (This one would appear during step one, and I recieved it atleast 100 times, each new time it would change numbers from 33143 to a new number) The second error message I recieved said this, "Correcting error in index $I30" It then proceeded to boot the OS after about 20 more errors, when the PC was booted I tried to install the printer again, and it still wouldnt run the install printer program. Any ideas of what is wrong? This is a company computer so I cannot install third-party software. Please give me some troubleshooting ideas, because this one is completely new to me. I was wondering, maybe it is the harddrive going bad, what do you think?

how were the windows updates installed without restarts? pse advise the lady to reboot her computer at least once per week so that XP can keep the OS updated and allow the self-correction diagnostics to operate.

Michael Kraft said: "If you run the Chkdsk.exe tool with no command-line switches against a Windows NT file system (NTFS) volume, Chkdsk.exe may report that problems were found, and suggest that you run the Chkdsk command with the /f switch to fix the volume. This is why you can run chkdsk multiple times and sometimes it will report errors and sometimes it will not. If you run chkdsk /v /f and it comes back with no errors than your disk is fine. You can also run chkntfs to see if Windows believes there is a problem with the drive."

an excellent description of what chkdsk can, and cannot, do can be found at:

Go back to “My Computer” and select C: (local disk) properties again, then select the tools tab. Select “Check Now” and the check the box that says automatically fix file system errors. The computer will prompt you to reboot. Reboot the computer…let the checkdisk run and then go back to “My computer” C: (local disk) properties and check the box (so it’s selected to re-index) to allow indexing service to index this disk…. Select ignore all errors Run chkdsk again and it should be clean! You may have to do this again after running widows updates or adding programs! "

Thnx for the advice. However the problem was a hard drive failure. Oddly enough, this is the second Hard drive installed in a year or so. Maybe its time to buy something besides a seagate eh? Thanks tho, your comments were informative.
