I have had to re-install XP in parallel after a registry problem. The thing thing is:
1) I can find my old files but can't access my old favourites folder (access denied) and 2) Can't find my old e-mails - mostly in Outlook Express but I changed over to Thunderbird and would like to have all these back 3) I would like to clean out all the old programmes etc from the old installation - is there a step by step way of doing this or can I just delete the old stuff from My Computer?

I would have just run a repair. You'll need to take ownership of the files in order to access them. Information here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
I'd then run a backup of those files and start from scratch. That will make for a cleaner install.
