Problem with XP Pro install

Specs: Windows XP Pro, Intel M/ 2gb
Hi I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. Intel M processor and I upgraded to 2gig ram. I recently bought a new hard drive Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320gb. I got the op disk from Dell Reinstall CD Microsoft Windows XP Pro service pack 3. I install the disk ran set up. When it restarted an error came up "A disk read error has occurred press CNTL+ALT+DEL to restart". When I did that same error message came up. I turned the computer off. Turned it back on hoping the cd would start so I can try install again. It would get to preparing your computer then it goes to a black screen and the set up welcome screen never appeared. What did I do wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the new hard drive SATA by any chance? If so the Install disk may not contain the necessary drivers. You may need to install a driver at the first F6 prompt during initial setup. Have you booted into BIOS to make sure the new hard drive is recognized?

No it's the PATA hdd. Now when I put the XP install disk in it will go to "Setup is Inspecting Hardware Configuration" and just stays on a black screen. I think when I did the initial install I missed the step where I'm supposed to create a partition. Is there a way to just start over?

Just a side note. When I put my old hdd in and start the computer it works just fine. I think the problem is the new hdd. somehow I was able to get into a dos prompt. did fdisk and got a message that I have one partition drive was blank and that it was format as NTFS. Got option to create a partition, delete a partition, create a boot partition but I could not select anything the cursor just blinks.
