Hi,
I had a hard drive crash on an old machine. Attempted to re-install xp home. The computer goes to "copy files" to my hard drive and during this process, I frequently get "cannot copy file" messages. I retry and sometimes it works, other times not. This can be any file. Very random and it's not always the same file. I figured it was the disk at first, so I borrowed an xp pro disk. Same thing happened. I tried a hacked version of xp home and a hacked version of xp pro. Same problem. All these disks were free of scratches and have worked fine on other computers. I figured the hard drive was bad. I replaced the hard drive. Same problem. I just replaced the IDE cable thinking perhaps that was it. Same problem. I'm at a loss here. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm running a custom made system. AMD/Athlon xp 1.7ghtz CPU, 512MB PC2700 RAM, 400watt Power supply. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried cleaning the CD drive? Or, try another drive.

RAM can cause that error to happen too.
Try running memtest from a boot disk.

Memory test http://memtest86.com/ There is a version to create a bootable floppy diskette and/or an ISO for creating a CD. Run the test for an hour or two (at least).
