I've upgraded from 98 to XP Pro recently.
I'm having a problem with XP not recognizing the driver for a "Multimedia Audio Controller". I really don't even know whether my soundcard is onboard or not. I do know that I have the Pent. II, 450 with the Intel 440BX chipset. I have a CompUSA American Pro PC from back when Comp was building their own PCs. I don't even know the manufacturer of my sound card. Is that a free utility on the internet that could tell that? Driver Detective v2 isn't working for me at all. It won't even install, although other programs install with no problem.Has anyone had this kind of problem? If so, how did you fix it?

why don't you find the by opening the cpu that you have a sound card or it on your mother board..if you have on your mother board..then you might wana go to the mother board site to find the driver for xp.
if you have a card..go the web site as i mentioned above..it will save more time then looking for the driver all over the internet..
here a another driver site, if you wana look
http://www.drivershq.com/

I don't want to open the system up seeing as I know nothing about the inside of a computer. I wouldn't even know what to look for. If I was properly schooled at that, then I wouldn't have even needed to get help from you guys. I would have done that in the first place. drivershq.com is the site with the Driver Detective program that doesn't seem to work for me.
I thought someone may have gone through what I'm going through now and may be able to direct me to another such software program that identifies hardware, drivers and manufacturers on a comp system.

Open ur CPU or have somebody who has quite a knowledge of computer hardwares open it for u.U should be able to read the brand of ur mother board, its only there the mother board is just a board. So if u see a big board -that is ur mothrboard -du get it? Now why am I keep on dealing with ur motherboard if ur real problem is ur sound card.It is bec. u dont know wether its on board or not and even if u had already or accidentally read the brand of ur sound card(ie.if it is not built in) u would not notice that bec. u have no knowledge about that sweettie. So pls. my dear, so that i can help u with ur problem read the magic words written on ur board. Its better if it also indicated in ur board the model of that brand. If u see these words in ur board try to surf it on the internet. Hint: to narrow ur searching just look on the mother brd. model which is compatible compatible to ur Pentium 2 450MHz procssor.Usually there is a picture included just loo on ur mother board and try for urself if ucan recognize ur board fr. the list.If u think u already found ur board but still confused bec. of its similarity with the other board try to compare their brands of sound card. Usually evevthough they are diff. model, manufacturer always use the same brand of card. The secret is try to download diff. drivers of that Snd. card brand as many as u can eventhough its a diff. model. Its ok bec. u dont know the specs. of ur sound card. Here's a sample of confusing model M756mrt or M756lrt
