We are trying to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP pro... It won't recognize our pci communications port so also won't detect the modem. We have tried switching ports and tricking it so to speak still nothing. We have also tried to do it through the device manager.. still nothing.. Any help would be appreciated.
The PCI communications port and the modem are the same thing. Make sure that the driver is compatible with XP. Go to the Web site of the manufacturer to check.
You might need to update your modem drivers. I had the same problem. Xp wouldn't detect my modem and you can't pick a com port. When i pick com port 2 during modem detect it wouldn't work. I would have to change port in the modem. go to Devicemanager>modems>(yourmodem)>advanced>advanced port settings and change the comport #to 3 or a number that the other communication ports don't have. After that at some points i would have to delete the modem and reboot and then it would detect the modem automatically. All I know is you need the latest driver and mess around with it. that's how I got mine to work. I hope this helped:)
