Here is the background,
I have two machines running XP PRO. Both have ethernet <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=uk&cf=1&ai=3590234&di=100234&ts=20031116111040" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,100234);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(100234);">network</nobr> cards installed.

The host machine is <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=uk&cf=1&ai=3590234&di=115834&ts=20031116111040" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,115834);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(115834);">connected</nobr> to the internet via a USB ADSL modem.

There is a netgear 4 port dual speed hub connecting the computers togther with a cat5 network cable each.

Now.

I followed the windows xp network wizard on the host machine, rebooted as promted.
Then I ran the network wizard on the other machine, and rebooted. Both machines are on the default workgroup MSHOME.

Both computers being on, the host has a user logged in 'Charles' with blank p/w, and the other computer has 'TJ' with blank p/w.

I go to My Network Places, then View Workgroup computers, after a long time the workgroup pops up and there we have both computers on it.
HOWEVER when I click on the other machine (respectivly) it pops up with an error 'Can not find network resource, check <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=uk&cf=1&ai=3590234&di=113957&ts=20031116111040" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,113957);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(113957);">access</nobr> permissions' or some such.

Also when I check the network <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=uk&cf=1&ai=3590234&di=118370&ts=20031116111040" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,118370);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(118370);">connection</nobr> status there is only activity being sent and NONE being recieved on both computers.

I have no firewalls installed, and I have turned off all the XP firewalls.
I have followed the troubleshooter several times and all no the same conclusion 'seek other help'.

Is there any brave soul who can help me??!?!

Also I have tried to ping each other computer and it just times out,

even though I can go to the Workgroup and it lists both computers.

I have also tried each network adapter mode (10 full duplex, half duplex, etc, etc) to see if anything changes, but it has not.

Basically each computer is sending data but nothing is being recieved on the other side, but I am certain the XP firewall has been disabled on each connection. I even tried enabling the firewall and allowing the localhost IP and ports.

Both computers appear in the workgroup but when I click on the other computer:
'Network path can not be found'
All drives have been shared.

ARRRHH this is crazy!!

I just checked my patch cables again and they are Cat5e,

Could this cause the hub to not send data from one computer to the other computer (respectivly), I think it says somewhere CAT5e is rated for 200Mbps, and my hub is a dual speed 10/100Mbps.

Charles.
