Tell XP to use it anyway. Hopefully XP will be able to use it otherwise you will have to wait for an official XP driver.

SOLUTION

Please download the Windows 2000 driver for
use with new, clean installs of Windows XP when Microsoft releases that OS in October 2001. Note that the Windows 2000 driver will NOT function properly with upgrades from another OS to Windows XP. Also, once loaded in Windows XP, the SM56 driver cannot be further updated. Thank You.

if your system restarts while installing the driver follow this procedure
first open the device manager and remove the modem.
restart
then remove the simple pci controller in the device manager which appears with a yellow question mark.
restart
now winxp will automatically find the modem.
now choose install manually option in the wizard and then click have disk and give the path of your win 2000 drivers.
ignore the warning that the driver is not digitally signed.
now your modem will work fine.
