Comment:

When I try to defrag I get the following message
Microsoft Management Console

MMC cannot open the file

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dfg.msc.

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console,
or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because
you do not have sufficient access rights to the file
I have no idea what MMC is...scan disk runs fine..can't find any spyware or virus on my puter...

I do not have dfg.msc on my machine. It may be spyware or a virus. Soory, don't have the time right now to do research for the problem. You might search google for the problem. Good luck

Maybe you spelled it wrong, but the file is

dfrg.msc

Try doing a SEARCH, files and folders, for that file. Then see if it in the System32 folder. If not in that folder, but somewhere else, then move it to there.

Yeh, chuck is correct. dfrg.exe is the exe file for defrag and belongs in the system32 folder.

You are right Chuck...I did miss spell it..but dfrg.msc is in the system32 folder and the message I get is
Microsoft Management Console
MMC cannot open the file
C:\WINDOW\SYSTEM32\dfrg,msc.
This may be because the file
does not exist, is not an
MMC console, or was created
by a later version of MMC.
This may also be because you do not
have sufficient access rights to the file.

Also
In the System32 folder there is also the file:

defrag.exe

Right click that file, then click "Create Shortcut". Windows will put the shortcut on your desktop.

Then if you click that Shortcut, maybe you can bypass all that MMC crap.

Better to DEFRAG in Windows
Safe-Mode. No programs or drivers running
there. Hold down F8 during boot.

Ms. Sara, you should not have to go through all that BS to get to defrag. Go to control panel and in there select proformance and maintenance. From there the next screen shows 4 lines of selections. The last one reads something like > rearainge the files for better proformance. That's the one you want. It takes you to the defrag screen. The BS you're going through is totally unacceptable.
