I have two video adapters:
* Matrox G450 Dual Header (for 2 monitors)
* S3 ViRGE (for one more)

I can get the two monitors using the Matrox card to work, but in the device manager the S3 ViRGE card has a yellow question mark on it and it says,
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
Any suggestions on why I can't get the third monitor working would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

First, have you ever had that setup working with any windows??

Second, do you have XP Pro or XP Home?????

Third, from what I remember reading... the matrox dual head uses the dual montior support by itself, basically making a 3rd monitor or second video card not work. After all we are talking about dual monitor, not dual video cards with 3 monitors. I guess in theory it should work... but it is dual monitor (meaning 2 monitors). Once you've got 2 monitors... I don't think it'll matter weather you've got one card or 10 cards..., once you get those 2 monitors working... that's that.

Just my theory though... don't take it the wrong way, I'm not bashing you... just saying.

Don't worry, someone else might know how to make it work... but I don't.

TK.

I haven't got this setup working; because I just bought the card when I decided to upgrade to WinXP. I have however been using two monitors w/ two video cards and for about a month I used three when I had a extra card laying around… and it worked fine.

Multiple monitors is an excellent way to do web development, photo editing, grahic desgign, and CADD. The extra real-estate is invaluable.
It's also useful when compensating for other inadequacies and looking like a PC genius to technical noobs. j.k. ; )

Code 10 is a hardware error indicating that the MB is gettting no signal from the card. Even though the drivers are installed and the OS can see it.

I monkeyed with this $%#$%$#% error for a week tryng to get mine running. to no avail...

XP PRO (as well as 2K, and 98SE) will do multi-display with PCI video cards. (dunno about ME, NT, or XP Home)

If one of your video cards is AGP you will need to verify that your BIOS allows it and hardware support it. (this is what hung me up, finally - my ASUS k7 board didnt support it)
Install the PCI first, get it running then add the AGP card.
Also make sure the PCI video card is in the first PCI slot (usually closest to the AGP slot, and farthest from the edge of the m-board.

Good Luck,
SugarBear

i have the same problem you have, I have a TNT2 and SE ViRGE and a trident. the trident is the one that i cant get working. I was wondering if the SE ViRGE maybe was made made back in the day when people only used 2 monitors and maybe you need that card to update the drivers. I was wondering if you had your setup work with win2k.

I have been using an s3 virge dx375 successfully with my second monitor for several months while running win93se. I just upgraded and now it doesnt work... same error that you are having. I have downloaded all of the latest winnt/2k drivers from s3graphics.com to no avail. It's really annoying not having the 2nd monitor after getting used to it for so long. Now i keep turning my head only to see a blank monitor
:(

Dear Troubled user,

I have been using dual monitor since Windows 98 and now using Windows 2000. There are some tricks for using the dual monitor for each Operating system.
Up to now, I have been using 2 different motherboards ( Intel 440 BX and Intel 815 Solano ) and 4 different Video Cards ( Voodoo 3/3000 AGP, NVIDIA GeForce MX/400 AGP, S3 Virge 375 PCI and SIS 6326 PCI ).
I used the combinations of those hardware under Windows 98 and Windows 2000. And all of them works.

THE TRICK IS IN THE BIOS.
Apparently, Both of the motherboard I used, always using AWARD Bios. Under the Integrated Peripherals menu,
there is a choice if you want to initialize which video card first ( or the default video cards ).
the choices is either : AGP/Internal or PCI

1. IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWS 2000, set the Initialize First video card to PCI.
2. If YOU ARE USING WINDOWS 98/98SE/ME, set the Initialize First Video card to AGP.

These terms ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, otherwise the operating system will end up in unpredictable situation.
For you guys who are using Windows 98/SE/ME previously and when upgrading to Windows 2000, just switch the initialize 1st video card to PCI.
MOSTLY they will work.

Note :
1. I do not know which motherboard or bios that you guys are using, so the choice or BIOS menu I mentioned may be unavailabe.
2. I use only two monitors with combinations :
Intel 440BX - Voodoo 3/3000 AGP - S3 Virge
Intel 440BX - Voodoo 3/3000 AGP - SiS 6326
Intel 815 - Voodoo 3/3000 AGP - S3 Virge
Intel 815 - Voodoo 3/3000 AGP - SiS 6326
Intel 815 - NVidia GeForce MX/400 AGP - S3 Virge
Intel 815 - NVidia GeForce MX/400 AGP - SiS 6326
those combinations works FINE under Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server and Windows 98/ME.
I have not tried the Windows XP yet, Since I relied heavily on Windows 2000 Advanced Server for my work.
I am using Oracle and SQL Server Database Server installed on the same machine,
thats why I have to use the servers edition of Windows 2000.
Since the Windows XP is the same base with Windows 2000, I can say it will work too.

3. My Nvidia GeForce is also prepared for 'DUAL HEAD' ( means dual monitor support in one card, just like Matrox G450 ).
But when I saw the Display Card physically, there are some components missing, like secondary display card D connector,
and some electronic parts, but the card is somehow 'prepared' for dual head feature.
When entering the Display Properties ( right click on the desktop and enter the Settings Tab, I found THREE monitors,
which I cannot enable just one of them ). I find this situation in Windows 98/ME. Under Windows 2000, I only found
TWO monitors.

4. For you guys who are using the S3 Virge, you do not have to search the latest driver. I already check the S3
( www.S3Graphics.com ), they dont have the driver for Win2k or even XP, since S3 Graphic already merged with VIA technologies.
the latest driver is inside the Windows ITSELF ( Windows ME/2000/XP ). You can also find it in Windows 98.
on those Operating systems, Windows will autodetect and install the proper driver without asking you to enter the driver's location/CD.

Right now what is bugging me is : I cannot switch the default initialized video card to AGP when I want to use Windows 2000.
my VGA PCI driver is always had Code 10 - Device is not working if my setting for Default initialized video card is AGP.
I tried both the S3 virge and SiS 6326. Both end with the same result.
I just wonder if someone can give some advice to deal with this.
I need the solution, since I am also using dual Operating system.
I have Windows 2000 Advanced Server on Drive C ( for work ) and Windows 98 on drive E ( for gaming and fun ).
I had to enter the BIOS first when I switched the operating system.
THIS IS REALLY BUGGING ME !!!!

Thanks SugarBear.

Same config as you noted October 29, 2001 at 09:02:08 Pacific, with ASUS A7V133.

Slot 1 did the trick, saved me a week.

Installing three monitors is the greatest thing i have ever done i dont know how i lived without them! i have had three running on win2000, 2*17" and one 15" and whoeva says its stupid "steve" youve got NFI. It makes my life a hell of alot easier. i can run programs like cooledit, sonar and acid all at once and actually be able to see the music im making without screwing about minimising windows. i wont even mention the advantages it has for the internet, gaming or movies. its not hard to set up so if you can get your hands on a monitor and a vid card do it!! even an old 8meg card will do for a secondary monitor! i havent been able to get three working on xp pro but im trying and im looking forward to getting the forth aswell.... thats my 2cents worth anyway.
