I'm having difficulty setting up a network with my old (basement) PC and my new (living room) PC. I've tried doing so using the network wizard with no luck.

Here's where I'm at now:

First, I disabled the XP firewall on both computers, then re-booted each. This did not help.

Next, I went to the basement computer and went through the network wizard again - the last window said that it is properly configured.

Then, I selected the C drive (still on the basement PC) and activated sharing of the drive. A window opened and, after a few minutes, it indicated that the drive was set up for sharing on the network. I did the same with a few other assorted files.

I went upstairs to the other computer, opened My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network > Home > Basement.

When I tried to open the Basement file, I got the following error message:

NOT ACCESSIBLE. YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THIS NETWORK RESOURCE. CONTACT THE ADMINISTRATOR OF THIS SERVER TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE ACCESS PERMISSIONS. THE NETWORK PATH WAS NOT FOUND.

When I click on Basement Properties, I get the message: THE SERVER COULD NOT BE FOUND ON THE NETWORK.

Both PCs connect to the internet with no problem.

I am 99.9% certain my connections are correct (internet > modem > router > to each PC).

I am able to ping the living room computer from the basement computer (haven't tried the other way).

I'm pretty much at a loss as to what to do next.

Thanks!

Jon

First thing you need to do is make sure you workgroup name on both computers is the same.
The computer names can be different but workgroup needs to be the same (obvious but sometimes missed)

Also if you have a Linksys router or your router is a router/firewall run their network setup for multiple PC's, it may be set so it will not allow access.

there is a good site called practicallynetworked that has a lot of info.
