Problem sending command to keyboard - er

I keep getting an error on my new HP laptop that pops up (twice in a row) right after the system is booted. It will also pop up twice again if the screen saver has been active and you return to the system. The error reads:
"Problem sending command to keyboard"
This also started when the Function/UP Function/Down key combination, for volume control, stopped working.
Is there a keyboard driver or something that needs to be reinstalled? I know it's software related because I have restored the system to an earlier state and it worked again but naturally if I left it that way I would lose everything that I had installed after that date.
Any ideas? I can't find this error listed anywhere on Microsoft's site and HP's solution is just to use the restore CD and lose everything.
