I have been having problems with XP pro tonite an have just done a sfc /scannow which did no good , followed by a repair with the XP disk that also did no good .
My problem is I installed a 15 day copy of counterspy to try it out and didnt like it so uninstalled it and went back to Antispyware but since then I am having problems .
The computer starts up ok and shuts down ok but if I click on an item on the desktop to open the cursar will just sit there and just shows it working with no action . I can go start - programs and try it that way but it still does the same .
I have tried everything that I can think of but cant get any sense out of it .
I hope I have explained it OK , I cant seem to do anything with this computer and have that much on it , that I dont really want to do a re install .
Hoping for some help .
Thanks
Peter

Maybe the uninstaller left some files around. Try going into the registry and look under local user, software to see if the program is still there. Also make sure it's not starting up when you boot.
I wish I was smarter

Hi Peter, merman, hello everyone,
Peter,
Download the EXEFIX in this link
and run it. It is #12 in the list.Best Regards,
Mesich

I was up half the night fixing this problem :) It appears that the problem was caused by the slackness of myself in not uninstalling Microsoft GIANT Antispyware before installing Counterspy tryout , and when I uninstalled Counterspy it really corrupted my registry so much that I couldnt really do anything . I tried in safe mode to uninstall Microsoft GIANT Antispy but I couldnt do it in Safe mode , because of windows installer not being present , I then was able to get into msconfig and changed to diagnostic startup then was able to move a round a bit but still couldnt uninstall The Microsoft GIANT Antispy because of the windows installer , but eventually bit by bit I got rid of it until when I rebooted I could start to access everything .
Thanks for the link mesich I was able to ressurect my registry so that it works once again .
What have I learnt from this :)
Well next time I will do the job properly instead of cutting corners , so thanks for your help and tips mesich and murman , they were very much appreciated .
cheers
Peter
