I have a HP laptop where the DVD drive is causing problem. It won't record DVD or CD's, if you put a movie DVD in the drive sometimes it won't acknowledge there is a disk there, when it does it refuses to play. Sometimes when you boot the laptop the DVD drive is not even seen.

Is this likely to be a Windows XP problem of a hardware issue??

You could try removing and reinserting the drive. It 'could' just be a poor connection.
