The problem is most likely the built-in Win XP firewall. I must turn it off every time I want to send files thru a chat program. [unless the other person also has Win XP, apparently -- at least with Msn] To turn off the firewall, go to the Control Panel, click on Network connections, click on the icon for your Internet connection; for example, under dial-up, if you use a modem, click that icon you get on the Net with. On the side menu, click on 'Change the settings for this connection'. An 'Internet Properties' box should pop up. Click on the Advanced tab. You will see 'Internet Connection Firewall' Uncheck the 'Protect ...' box, then keep clicking OK on all the buttons, in all the silly boxes that pop up. The firewall will now be OFF, and you should be able to send files thru the chat programs you mentioned. One other catch: the other side you are sending to, most likely must have any firewalls THEY have, also turned OFF. If there is any other, easy way to shut off the Win XP firewall, I don't know what it is. You may want to keep the firewall on when you are not sending/receiving files, esp. if you have a DSL connection. I guess it DOES help protect your computer, even from yourself : )
