I'm trying to format my hard drive that has XP Pro currently installed but can't seem to do it from ms-dos. Any suggestions? This is what happens:
format c: The type of file system is NTFS.
WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)? y Verifying 6181M
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use.

Yeah, gotta use the XP cd, because when you boot to DOS, you're still running XP in the background. XP doesn't run off a DOS platform, like say 95/98/ME. It just emulates DOS. Use the XP cd to use it's own bootable option, or use a bootable floppy disk and format.
