Probelm with Windows Explorer

February 24, 2009 at 21:00:30
Specs: Windows XP
I have a problem with Windows Explorer a couple of days back. To create a new folder, I use File/New/Folder and previously it creates one called New Folder and I can rename it. However, now Windows Explorer creates it and automatically generates a name for it. What is the problem and how can I rectify it? Thanks.

What sort of names ? Do you think it could be caused by malware? Have you tried scanning for virusus and malware? Have you tried reloading a restore point?

Well, the generated name can be any random name. I just tried it, and it gave a folder name "swan". Yes, I had ran AVG, Spotbot-Search & Destroy and also ZoneAlarm Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware. There were no viruses or spywares. I had also tried restore to a previous restore point to no avail. What can be the problem?

It sounds like malware to me. Try loading up safe mode (F8 before the xp splash screen)and see if it happens then. Give windows defender a try, i've seen that find and fix a few malware related problems where other software hasent. Also try cleaning your registry. There is a link here for a search.

What are some of the other random names for the folders? Are they all words?

All the random names are words. Tried safe mode, cleaned registry with Registry Mechanic, Registry First Aid and RegCure, but the problem still persists. Windows Defender? I will try to get hold of a copy and try. Thanks all for your interest in my problem.

william777, See post #3 in the thread at the link below. Do you by chance have ALZip installed? When you said that it named a folder "Swan" which is a type of bird it was a clue.

<excerpt>

Simply click New folder to create one ('directory' and 'folder' refer to the same thing). The default folder name will be a species of bird. New folder functions the same as New --> Folder in Windows Explorer. Using the ALZip New folder function is simply much faster and more convenient than the traditional Windows Explorer option - one click as opposed to clicking, repositioning your cursor, and waiting for a flyout menu.

</excerpt>

This link is a Vista forum but would also be applicable to XP if you have ALZip installed.

In reply to stephenturns: I had Windows Defender installed and, after running it, all the files in my drive were OK. But the problem is still there.

Reply to Tufenuf: Thanks for your interest. Yes, I do have ALZip installed and yes the folder names were all some sort of bird names. So it is not a virus, spyware or malware and I should ignore it. Phew!

Thanks all for your assistance in getting to the root of it.

william777, You may want to check out the link below where you may find how to turn off that automatic folder bird name feature.
