Probedis.exe errors on shutting down Windows XP SP3 PC

My friend has Windows XP SP3. Recently when attempting to shut down, the computer does not respond and then the probedis.exe error comes up. You have to try shutdown twice before it actually shuts down. Anyone know what could cause this? I did a little research on the internet and it looks like a can of worms! Is this error in any way related to a US Robotics 5699B modem? In one person's case, updating the driver had no effect. Also read that the registry may need cleaning. Need some direction on this. Thanks.

The computer is at my friend's house. He is 30 miles away from me. I visit every once and a while to help with computer issues. So, I would have to ask him to get the dump file. Let me get back to you. It may take a while. I would have to guide him on how to access the file.
