AFAIK you cannot "upgrade" [won't it be really a down grade :-)] WinXP Pro to Win XP Home

If you try, I guess, you will get a warning message something like "you have a version that is higher than the version you are going to install etc.."

I have to shift from SP1 pro to SP2 home...after i inserted the home SP2 cd, the installation guide pop up and did not alert me that i have a newer verion, so does that mean i can upgrade it to SP2 home?

I do not know about if Home will overwrite Pro,
but you could install Home into a "new folder" as stated in this->

I agree you could install it to a different Folder creating a Dual Boot system, unless JC wants the proof of the pudding..:-)

First you need to do a complete ntbackup of your system and check it.
Then do a fresh install.
