I have an HP LaserJet 4PLus printer, and I attached it via the LPT port of the computer - XP picked it up and installed it right away, I didn't need the driver CD. I could then print from it. I was happy. Then, about an hour later, I went to print something and NOTHING.The same thing always happens: the little picture of the printer appears next to the time in the lower right hand corner of the screen next to the time, and after about 1 second, it disappears. I get no error, and nothing prints. I tried all I could think of- turning computer/printer off, waiting a minute, then starting them again. nothing. uninstall/reinstall -nothing. I made sure it was online. I'm going nuts, can anyone tell me the solution????

The type of parallel port may not be set properly in the BIOS. Look for three different port types. The SPP is the oldest, the other two are for enhancesments like bi-directional communication. Also, your cable could be the wrong type, too long or defective. Of course, none of the above may apply but easy enough to check out.
