Printer locks up computer

Have hp deskjet 712C printer and Hp pavillion 521n computer which came with windows xp installed. When trying to print from cd, fax and printer wizard pops up, then computer locks up and must be turned off. Operating on home local area network. Have Nortons 2002 installed. Have called HP several times and each time there recommendations work for a day or two and then problem starts all over again. Have checked search engine but did not find answer to problem. Not very computer literate. Need help!
what did HP recommend so far? (so we can get an idea of what worked and why) What program are you using to print? windows explorer? Sounds like the wizard is crashing, so you might want to try avoid using it?

curious do you mean you have a cd in the drive and are trying to print directly something from a cd?
could you tell us the fix that works for a day or two may give us a clue as to what the problem is?

Start->right-click My Computer->Properties->Hardware tab->Device Manager button->right-click on the printer icon->Properties->General tab->have a look at the Device status.
Also, click on the Resources tab to see if there are any resource conflicts.
