My printer icon (spooler) refuses to budge from my taskbar and is causing me problems with shutting PC down <on hibernation> and possibily shutdown.
Is there a way I can delete this printer icon from my taskbar from somewhere else?
Thanks

Right click the empty space in the Task Bar, then select “Properties.”
On the main page of the properties.. select “Customize” on the bottom of the screen. On this new screen locate the listing for your printer and click on it.Now you can set the icon to be “Always Hidden” “Always Show” or “Hide when Inactive.”
It sounds like you have it set to “Always Show.”
Tomorrow the Stars!

Tested it again but unfortunately even after unchecking the printer from the taskbar the spooler is interfering with my closing PC in hibernation. Any ideas what to do next!

In doing some reading about spooler, I am thinking of you to see it will remove by deleting all files in this folder--
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS
That is the default spooler folder.
All just a shot in the dark.

I came up with that idea from the following article--
How to Move the Windows Default Paging File and Print Spooler to a Different Hard Disk
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314105/en-us

Your printer icon is most likely a propietary task linked to your type of printer, and not the spool service task in XP.
You can go into msconfig and turn it off there, loading it at boot is optional and your printer will still function regardless.

you mean you don't want to allways have to right click on the printer icon and close or exit from there or you don't want to open task manager and close it there or go to msconfig and tell it not to load when you boot the system ?

Doubt it is the Printer Icon that moonbeam is talking about. It is the Print Queue ?
Overview--
'The print queue shows the documents that are waiting to be printed. For each item on the list, information, such as the print status and number of pages, is provided.'If I interrupt printing, the print job remains in the Queue. I have to turn off my printer, to be able to cancel the print jobs, then it takes several cancel attempts. Once the jobs are removed, the Print Queue goes away.

First time something similar happened to me ...
Tried to print today and the print que just hung there no response so I cancelled the que ... wouldn't go away
tried print again still nothing ... messed around abit then gave up (just a C/D label nothing important) then I ...
switched user's and lo and behold there was a print preview awaiting my approval (?) why there I ask ... Hmmmmmm gotta look deeper ... will try to post after I go to bed and get up
