Recently my computer has started crashing on startup. It kept rebooting itself over and over and then will eventually log into windows with a lot of errors in between. After several days of troubleshooting my system, I finally did a clean install to no avail. So I placed it in the local PC-repair shop. All worked fine until I re-loaded my Lexmark-1150 printer and drivers, then the entire process started back up again and I have never had this issue before in the year I have owned this PC. I called the PC repair place and they stated my usb card needs to be replaced...I am asking if there is anything I can do to fix this problem myself verses paying to have it fixed? I have tried correcting this problem by:
1.)Clean installed XP
2.)Updated ALL drivers (inluding LexMark-1150)
3.)Updated all windows updates**EXCEPT for XP-SP2**(I had issues with it the first time I installed it and have clean intsalled without it)
Is there anyone who has any suggestions? I am somewhat computer savvy, but may need a walkthrough with more technical BIOS issues if applicable.
Thanks so very much in advance. I appreciate the help and hopefully saving some money.
Sincerely,
DKM

Hi Deb,
I have an HP connected to the on mobo USB [probably USB 1.1] and if I start the PC from cold with the printer power ON, I get a BSOD.
With the printer connected but powered OFF, it boots as expected.
My "solution" is to simply leave the printer turned off except when I need it.
My guess is that the mobo USB is not broke [neither yours nor mine]; it's just a quirk of windows.

USB info: 4 onboard, 2 optional. USB 2.0
Thank you. I am just confused as to how this all just recently started. I have not added anything new to my PC to cause conflict, so I am truly baffled. I appreciate your quick responces and am looking forward to learning more. I wanted to let you know that my Printer/Scanner works fine, as long as I wait to plug it in ^AFTER^ I have booted into windows. But I don't dare try to reboot with the usb cord plugged in or I will get the BSOD again. Also, I paid $90.00 for the tech to tell me he found NOTHING wrong with my PC last week when he had it in the shop..of course I didn't decipher it to being the Printer until I plugged the Printer back up last night...Thanks again guys..you are a great bunch here :)
Sincerely,
Deb

Hi M2, Thank you for your help, you have been very kind...Did you say ^^no charge for looking at a PC?^^..hmmmm..where do you work?..lol..I paid $45.00 just for walking the PC in their door that morning and the other $45.00 for walking it out that same evening. I paid for their rush delivery service and they charged me for running diagnostic tests on it..he was kind enough to wavier his $60.00 an hour fee due to not finding anything wrong with it...so I guess I still came out better than I thought I would. I did however look into your suggestion about turning the Printer off before starting the PC..but it looks to me that it only comes on while in use anyway. The power light is always off and automatically comes on when I have a printing or scanning job to do..but as of now, I am keeping the usb unplugged until my next print task is needed.
Thanks again :)
Sincerely,
Deb

Hi Deb,
I'm about three hours South of Burma, in Thailand.
Often you can get enough help in these forums to minimize your costs, and maybe develop some self-reliance.

Here is food for thought. MSoft some time ago came up with virtual device drivers that any device running under Windows now needs to address. This was done to make windows more stable. Where I am going here is that the Lexmark driver obviously doesn't play nice with windows. Have you tried to use a different driver for this printer? possibly a native XP driver? I know this isn't going to help, but I have to say that I would NEVER buy a lexmark printer. Not because of your issues, I wasn't aware there may be any, but because of thier high handed abuse of the DRMA act. To speculate as to why this problem started just recently, I would guess there is an issue between some recent WinXP update and the Lexmark drivers. If this is a widespread problem it is possible Lexmark or MS may have a solution.

I thank you all for the suggestions..but I just got fed up and decided to do another clean istall just for the pure aggrivation of it...and guess what?..It worked !! Now the printer is working fine and no more BSOD! I do not know why or how it worked..just know it seemd to have fixed my previous problem. Just wanted to let you know for future references and thank all who helped.
Have a great evening all..this is a great group of people who never seem to mind adding a suggestion or a kind word for those of us who really have issues.
Sincerely,
Deb

Hi Deb,
I'm way overdue for a frsh dose of w2k; I just don't want to hassle it.
My "6 in 1" card reader sometimes goes BSOD if i't attached at power-up; sometimes not; somes OK with no card in; sometimes not.
Beats me. As with so manmy thing winders, I don't know why it does. It JUST DOES.
Best regards
M2
