Hello all, I have an epson stylus c40sx (lucky lad aren`t I), yesterday I ran the clean nozzle facility (noticed banding in the printing), must have run it 10 or 12 times before it came right, but when I ran the clean heads the last time on a test print out I had lost the black and it only printed the colours. In the system monitor (printer) it shows a full cartridge of black, I have tried changing settings and downloaded the newest drivers to no avail. When I try to print a word doc in black, nothing, as far as I can see I have only 2 options left,1. uninstall and re-install the printer or change the black cartridge (in case I bought a duff one and its empty, but then it would show empty in the status monitor), any help would be greatly appreciated

No doubt, change the black cartridge; the clean nozzle facility is an ink heater and the ink level showed in Status Monitor is only qualitative not a true measurement of its level, so you may be really dry.

The cartridge is only 2 days old and I have only printed 1 thing off (and printed test runs), shouldn`t be empty now should it?, admittidly it wasn`t the epsom brand, a compatable cartridge. Thanks for replying so quick

Take it or send it back to the supplier for replacement or refund. I use Inkcycle @
www.inkcycle.co.uk
and this has happened to me only once. I phoned (Freephone 0800 071 2278) and had a free replacement and freepost label the next day. So I was not out of pocket one penny. In fact I had about a ¼ of its fill used.

This is only of use to UK users of course!

Hi Jim
If you think the cartridge still has ink in it you might want to try this. Just take the black cartridge out and instead of replacing it with a new one, put the old one back in. This fools the printer into thinking that it has a new cartridge. If the black still won't print then it's a good bet that the ink is out.
