Did you connect the drive to the Primary IDE channel as a Master ?

Is the jumper correctly positioned ?

Do you know if your computer BIOS is capable of supporting a HDD of that size ?

Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website, there may be a BIOS update available.

Did you get a Maxtor Utility disk with the new HDD ?
And did you try using the disk to setup the HDD ?

Hi there krystyna, thanks for the reply.
I have connected the hdd to the primary IDE as a master and the jumper is correct.
I don't know if my bios is capable of the size of the hdd.
I`ll try the website to see if there is an update for my bios
and didn`t get a disk with the hdd

cheers for your help
will let you know how i get on

Hi Paul

If you're a beginner, then I don't advise attempting a BIOS flash just yet!!

Download PowerMAX, the Maxtor utility that will check your hard drive, and also can configure and install it.

still no luck with the PowerMax it keeps bringing up the same message "Pri Master Hdd Error". It done a wicked job of fixing an 80gb hhd drive i had that was lying about.
Nice one for that !!!
Good bit of kit !!!

Hmmm...
I looked at the specs of that drive, and it says it is a S-ATA drive.
Is that correct ?
If so, it needs a different cable to the IDE cable.

What is the model number of your drive ?

The Maxtor site has an extensive knowledgw base.
I found a neat little online flash video that shows you how to install the drive, and the BIOS settings.
