Comment:

sometimes after some programmes' installation they reboot windows automatically. I read somewhere that one can prevent that somehow by telling windows NOT to shut down, when it's about to do so. But I can't remember what the directive is that has to be issued to winxp. If I knew, I would create a link on desktop and click on it quickly just before windows shuts down. Has somebody got any idea?

You should reboot. You run the risk that your install will fail.

No program would reboot automatically without asking for permission. Read carefully before you click Ok or anything. If there is only one option to reboot, don't click on it untill you done with your things.

"No program would reboot automatically without asking for permission"

yeah, but sometimes I click "ok" button too fast, without reading the actual message.

"start/control panel/system/advanced/startup & recovery/untick automatically restart"

this only controls the automatic restart in case of emergency (if windows crashed for example), it has nothing to do with restarts initiated by installed programmes
