I don't think you can be to prepared for failure, but I just want to make sure I am as prepared as can be. Can someone tell me everything that is possibly needed in case a sysem failure (want boot up, hard drive crash, etc.). I hope you get the idea. Thanks for any thoughts!

Post your present configuration. Hard to advise/scale the response without knowing that.

Purchase you a copy of this and read all about it and you should never suffer from data loss even if your computer blows up!

You have took more steps already than most people take just asking about it. Most people dont even think about it until the day they cant get to it! My certified public accountant I use is not differant. I asked him one day while he was doing some buisness for me what would happen if he lost his computer data. He said man it would be like cutting off his head. He had no backup for mega amounts of pertinant data of years obtaining. For someone like this, its foolish not to keep a backup. Its all a matter of how important you information is to you and could you or would you like to do without it? If not, back it up!

I agree 100% with doc. Backing up your data no matter what medium you use is paramount. Systems come and go, but your data is a permanent fixture.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

scale: are we talking a single pc or a business network?

Backup is a recourse of last resort. I have see folks backup and never check the tapes. They backedup garbage for years. There are a number of other considerations but those are effected by the SCALE.

I have programs and stuff there is no way I could ever get them back if they were lost. I have had them for years and will always have them because I have backed them up. Tape drives suck! Harddrive backups are the way to go!

This is for my personal computer. I have pictures, mp3, and personal files. I just want to make sure every thing is backed up and I am prepared to recover the computer if it acts up.

If you have a copy of windows to reinstall if a failure comes along and the rest of your programs then the things you have above are all backupable thru windows backup which you have with xp and there is no need for any other software.

jwl84 since this is a personal computer the only things you can really backup are your data files.

For example if your mainboard dies you would have to completely reinstall XP. This precludes using something like Ghost to image your system.

If you just want to backup your data using Ghost to dvd-rw is an excellent option.

Other considerations are doing ide raid and mirroring your drives. This protects you from a drive failure and losing everything.
Another consideration is putting in a UPS with a smartcard and software. This way if you get hit by a blackout/brownout your pc can gracefully shutdown instead of crash.
