Just a couple of preference questions I can't seem to figure out on my own:

1. How do I set my mouse pointer to only have to click on a desktop icon once to open it versus double-clicking?

2. When starting up Windows, I notice the loading boot screen (the Windows XP logo with the loading bar) is too big and off-center and off-screen: how can I fix this resolution?

3. When clicking on the start menu and moving to the My Documents icon, there is no option to pull out a drop-down menu; I have to click on it to see its contents.

Thanks to whomever!

Look in Control Panel for a mouse listing and open. Should show how there.

1- just go into control panel, then double click on mouse and set it to whatever
2- Also in the control panel double click on display and set it to the size you like
3- I'm not quite sure on this one, but I'm sure someone else will come up with the solution.

In the mouse options in the Control Panel there is no option for changing double click to single click. And how do you think you can change the loading screen on start up through the Control Panel?

1. wrong ... for single click action, open My Computer, click Tools, select Folder Options. With the "General" tab selected, choose the item labeled "Single click to open an item (point to select)".

2. wrong ... the display settings in XP will have NO effect on the Windows Boot Logo. it will always be 640x480

if you don't like it, open start, run, type MSCONFIG, click BOOT.INI and check the box '/NOBOOTGUI' ... no boot logo will be displayed.

3. right click on the task bar, select properties. start menu, customize, advanced. in 'start menu items' scroll to 'my documents' and set it to 'display as menu'.

Open My Computer / Tools / Folder Options / Click items as follows, then put a dot in Single-click to open a item (point to select)

Then put a dot in Underline Icon titles only when I point at them.

Click Apply and exit.

Hey I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong....
I guess to err is human, thank you for your kind suggestions Oracle :) I know you meant well.

For the number 2 question:
a-JDawggS316, does your display appear fine after boot-up?
b-are you by chance using an LCD monitor?
c-if your display is fine after boot-up, then why worry about the size of the logo?

Oracle, you said those three responses to the Mouse click question were wrong. They may not be your preference as to how to change the settings, but they are not wrong.

There are always as least two ways to perform an action in Windows. I think you owe the guys an apology...

to be clear, the numbers 1-3 do not refer to the responses 1-3 in this thread but to the answers given in response #2.

and if you want to show me how to change from double click to single click via the Mouse properties in the control panel, fine by me. always willing to learn some new tricks.

Oracle

The issue of the mouse properties is dependent on what type of mouse you have. Not knowing what mouse the OP has I elected to send them to control panel.

I have a MicroSoft Intellimouse Optical USB. My software, which can be accessed via control panel or My Computer, DOES have double click as one of the multitude of choices I have for the left button as well as all the other buttons.

That said, I personally would not recommend that setting. I use a bookmark to reach this site. In order to open the bookmarks I must single click. Double clicking gets me nothing.

Another way to show the folders in My Documents.
Start> settings> taskbar and start menu> start menu> customize> check “expand my documents”.

I have found there are usually at least TWO ways to accomplish most tasks in Windows.

I sense a bit of attitude in response 9, but that's fine. This world is made up of different people to say the least :)
I guess if we were all the same things would be real boring...LOL.

The thing is, no-one is getting paid for posting their replies, this is just a great forum where people can voice their opinions and try to help others to the best of their knowledge and ability and I'd have to say that many people leave their posts happy to be helped.

I myself used repair depots in the past and I must say they can really sock it to you when it comes to repairs. It's always more rewarding to actually fix things yourself.

computing.net IMO is the most organized and helpfull site on the net and it's great that members contribute their PC knowledge and secrets to ensure HAPPY surfing and good PC performance.

... which applies to the classic start menu.

Wow, debate abound. Thanks to all who provided me with the correct answers. And as far as the logo boot screen goes, it's just as the title says "preference." It's annoying to look at off-center anyway lol
