Power Saving Mode?

July 17, 2009 at 09:14:16
Specs: Windows XP
For some reason, maybe related, my computer randomly shut itself off and rebooted. I didn't think much of it, just figured the computer was being wacky- but then today every time I turn it on, it says "power saving" mode and the screen shuts off (the tower stays on.) The tower was also making noise earlier, sort of like a fan on steroids- it's stopped now, but it's till not getting out of power save mode, whatever that even is.

Anyways, I didn't really notice anything before the computer rebooted itself; the performance was fine, and I wasn't going on any sites out of the ordinary or opening any emails that say OPEN ME FOR VIRUS, so I'm a little confused.

Thanks a hundred.

Check the fan on your video card. The video card has probably overheated and shut itself of. The power saving mode you see is generated by the monitor because it is not getting a signel from the video card.

Its video related. Monitor is going into power save mode not the computer. Because you are seeing that I would check monitor cable first(easiest) and then video card

See event viewer logs too.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Kind of hard to see event viewer if monitor is not getting signal
