Is it ok to leave my computer & monitor on all the time with a screen saver or should I be turning off? For example I have my computer set to check for viruses every night at 3:00 AM.

Is it better to use a screen saver or no screen saver and just have the monitor power off automatically?

"Better" is strictly a matter of personal preference. The screen saver is pretty much an executive toy, like a lava lamp, or an aquarium. The screen on modern monitors won't burn out or form a fixed image as a result of leaving it on all the time. That was the issue when screen savers were invented in the 1970's. If you're concerned about conserving electricity, using a screen saver is better than not using one, and setting your monitor for automatic power down is better still.
I don't think you need to be like me, but I set the screen saver to kick in after 12 minutes of idle time, and then the monitor powers off after 45 minutes without key strokes or mouse movement.

I'm with Dr. Zhivago regarding the 12 minutes of idle time and 45 minutes without key strokes or mouse movement.

By the way I like your username Dr. Zhivago - it reminds me of Boris Pasternak novel.
