After the POST where the system starts looking to the devices (CD-ROM, A:, or HDD) for an operating system or boot disk the system just stops. There is a blinking cursor and no error message of any kind. The boot sequence looks good and the drives are all configured (jumper settings and whatnot) properly. I believe the IDE controller is broken or something because the computer will recognize a DOS 6.2 boot disk when I insert it into the 3 1/2 floopy drive. Both HDs installed have an OS on them so it really shouldnt matter which is master or slave, and when I have any sort of boot disk in the CD-ROM, nothing happens. Is the IDE controller bad? I ordered a new mobo but hopefully it is unneccessary.

How did you do the duel boot? Was it once working?
Try unplugging the slave harddrive and boot. (Middle plug on ribbon)
if that dont work start by unplugging hardware that is bootable.. Like remove the cdrom, try with one harddrive set to master.
Also check the jumpers on the HDs. Set one to master and one to slave.. I have seen problems happen when the jumpers were set to cable select. Master/slave present.
------
Get FireFox You'll be happy you did.

It isnt set up to do a dual boot. I'm just establishing that it could boot off of either HD if necessary. I have tried booting with either one or the other HD as master and no slave and I have tried setting the secondary IDE as the one to be booted off of and I replaced the CD-ROM with the HD. That gave me some errors. The POST is seeing the HDs and reading their volume info OK, but it isnt doing anything beyond that.

hi,
in bios is floppy seek enabled?sometimes it will give you a flashing cursor and then just stop and hang forever.if so try disabling it in bios and restart see if that works.

I have tried booting the system with floopy seek both enabled and disabled with the exact same results.

hi,
try changing the boot sequence to maybe c ,a,cdrom or a,c,cdrom maybe one of your devices is faulty see if changing the boot order will allow you to boot up.

"Both HDs installed have an OS on them so it really shouldnt matter which is master or slave"
Yes it doese matter what one is master or slave. If one has 9x on it then it need to be Master. Also you would have to install XP on slave while 9x is on the master drive. Then when it boots it will ask witch OS you want to boot to.

The strange solution...
I ended up fixing it by ejecting the cd rom (the computer was lying on its side) and putting the tower upright and then pushing the cd-rom back in. The cd was lopsided in there or something and it wasnt spinning up. Instead of outputting an error, the system just froze. I reinnstalled XP and everything looks great now! Freaking old ass CD-roms....they'll be the death of me
