Hi,

I have several workstations in a branch office going through an ADSL modem/router. All are set up with the router as DNS server and gateway. Only one has the following problem. There is no configuration
in the router than would affect just this station.

It will resolve outside domain names so is not a DNS problem, but will not return ping to any domain and IE cannot browse anywhere. Oddly with one exception so far, that being our mail server. The machine will connect to it and retrieve email, also return a ping. 127.0.0.1 returns a ping. hosts file has not been altered. I Cannot copy files over the network also - so it is like a port block or tcp/ip problem - but nothing obvious shows up.

The computer had NOD32 anti-virus spam, but I removed it. Nothing much in the event log.

Any ideas on how to identify the problem much appreciated.

Peter

i assume from the fact that you have established remote domain lookup that you used the NSLOOKUP tool.

Can it ping its own IP address?

If it simply can't retrieve webpages, then maybe the IE settings are wrong. Is it configured to use a proxy server?

Is there anything different with this workstation? e.g. different hardware, OS, firmware?

Have the system files used by IE been corrupted by malware?

you can set up a TCP/IP reporter on your workstation:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=837243

Also there is a simpler tool, it's called something like MSPortQuery but i'm not sure. It tests which ports are active on a remote computer.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't bother with nslookup as I can easily see names resolve to the proper IPs.

Yes, can ping own IP.

IE is set up properly. But as I can't get a ping back either, I am not focussing on IE. I think the problem must be more basic.

Nothing special about this unit - and it did work before. I think hardware problem is a possibility, though. I recall something similar several years ago.

I will have a look at that KB article and just found a several more (in case anyone is interested):
How to troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity with Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067/
and How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357

I'll try all those tomorrow and post results.

Peter
