possible corrupt FS, win xp cd fails

Specs: win xp professional, 1.66 GHz/2040MB
I recently bought an IBM thinkpad T60 from someone. It had a fresh install of win xp professional with ms office 2003 and photoshop 7. We often put it in sleep mode, i dont know if this is relevant. after a little while it started acting up, the built in mouse and keyboard wouldnt work when it woke up, the screen would go blank and not come back when watching a movie. sometimes the mouse and keypad wouldnt work after a regular reboot. needless to say it had a lot of hard reboots.

yesterday after, after two months ownership, it was showing the win xp black screen for a while, and it gave the blue screen of death and wouldnt recover when rebooted:
Technical information:
*** STOP 0X000000ED (0X89DCBE30, 0X0000006, 0X0000000, 0X00000000)

I looked around and figured i have a corrupt File System. A few sites said I needed a win startup disk. so, i bought a used winxp pro cd but it was dark and when i got home it turns out its very scratched and makes horrible noises in the dvd drive. (i set up bios to boot to cd first and removed the hd from bios startup)

so the help pages say im supposed to stick the startup disk in and wait for the welcome to setup but i never get that far.

the first time, i got to the blue windows setup screen and it said:
File fdc.sys caused an unexpected error (32768) at line 5964 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c

the second time it died saying: File \i386\halaacpi.dll could not be loaded
the error code is 7

the third time it said: the file ftdisk.sys is corrupted

so, first question, are the different errors because i have a bad win xp cd?

2. If not, what do i do and where do i get the disks i need?

3. was the problem caused because of sleep mode or did i buy a lemon?

this is very frustrating and im typing this on my imac which itself has issues including a keyboard that doesnt completely work and a HD that sometimes cant be found (i know, i need a new one but that costs $$) thats another story though.

I hope ive explained the problem well enough, any help is greatly appreciated!

You should check the integrity of the hard drive file structure, run CHKDSK /R from the Recovery Console.
