when trying to run populous the beginning on xp the game installs ok but when you press play game it resorts to the menu again after about a second .ive tried to find an xp patch for this programme without any luck. i have also installed service pack 1 and i have a ati radeon 8500le/128mb

Have you tried to change the compatibility option in xp right click on exe program and go to properties. There is a tab called compatibility. Change to lower version and try. It should resolved problem.
